四国に到着する坊ちゃん。教頭の赤シャツ、顔の蒼く膨れたうらなり、坊主の山嵐など、同僚の教師にあだ名を付ける坊ちゃん。宿に帰ると早速清に手紙を書く。山嵐がやってきて親切にも下宿の紹介をしてくれる。

坊ちゃんは初めて教壇に立つ。四限を終えて、「教師ははたで見るほど楽じゃないと思った。学校にはだいぶ慣れた坊ちゃんだったが、下宿先の主人が、骨董を買わないかと始終持ちかけてくるのに辟易する。天麩羅蕎麦を食べれば翌日教室で生徒に「天麩羅先生」とからかわる。団子を二皿食べれば黒板に「団子二皿七銭」と書かれる。湯屋で泳げば「湯の中で泳ぐべからず」。まるで生徒に見張られているようだと嫌気がさす。

宿直の当番で学校に泊まることになる坊ちゃん。することもないので、電車で温泉に出かけるが、校長である狸に出会ってしまう。悪びれる様子もない坊ちゃん。
